Exercise bikes provide a “non weight bearing” exercise which is ideal for anyone who has any knee, ankle, foot or hip problems. The leg muscles (quadriceps) are the largest muscle group in the body and you certainly get your heart rate up by riding a stationery bike as you use all of these large leg muscles. There are a range of bikes with manual resistance and programs and even spin bikes where you can get out of the seat and pedal like a real racing bike. Recumbent (or sit down) bikes are also a great way to exercise and they provide you with a back support for comfort and support, you are also pushing forward which uses more muscle groups than an upright bike. If you are in the market for a bike we would certainly suggest that you at least try a recumbent bike and compare how comfortable they are.
